Apparently, there’s a podcast of me reading and another one of the lively discussion we had afterwards at the Writers’ Hub live event. So if you couldn’t make it and wondered what you missed, go and have a listen. I don’t remember much of what I said except at one point I did say that the key to a writing career in Scotland was a decent thermal base layer. Keeping warm is important…

I say apparently, because I haven’t had the nerve to go and listen because I hate the sound of my recorded voice. I’m pretty sure that in real life I don’t sound like Barbie with a cold, but that’s the way I always seem to come across. So I won’t be checking it out myself, and I apologise if you in fact find yourself listening to something completely unexpected instead…

Inside Out Festival

I’ll be making the long trek down to ‘that London’ to appear – and reading – at the Inside Out festival on Monday 25th October – details here. It’s all part and parcel of the Writers’ Hub from Birkbeck, a lively resource for writers and the people who love them – or love to read them anyway.

If any readers are in London and can come along, don’t forget to come up and say hi afterwards. I’ll be the one picking straw out of her hair … if you’re really lucky I’ll have remembered not to wear my fleece

Wigtown Festival

This year the Wigtown Festival is holding Wigtown Ink, a ‘festival within a festival’ – for writers, by writers. And I’m delighted to say I’ll be there – I hope that people can join me. I’ll be around on Sunday 26th September at the Book Bazaar (1-3pm) and then again on Monday 27th September at 2pm in conversation about Out of a Clear Sky. And for anyone who likes a more hands-on event, Hugh Bryden and I and others from the Dumfries Writers will be holding a session at 12pm on that day on Getting into a Fankle…

New short story coming soon

A brand new short story – All in Foreign – will be coming out at the end of May in Dumfries’s newest publication, the Fankle.

I should confess that I’m the editor, so it’s not all that surprising that I’m in it (but all of the pieces were chosen strictly on the basis of merit of course!). It’s a brand new venture and very exciting – you can read more about it on the Fankle website.

One Book, One Scotland

One Book, One Scotland is celebrating the life of John Buchan this year, and particularly The Thirty-Nine Steps. If you haven’t read it, I urge you to do so – it won’t take long as it’s a ripping yarn and while some of its sentiments may be a little out of date, its pace and unrelenting action are bang up to date – think The Bourne Ultimatum, but with more tweed.

Anyway, I’ve been invited to Bishopbriggs Library as part of this to talk about my own book, Out of A Clear Sky, which I hope is every bit as gripping to the reader. I’m particularly glad to be asked because it gave me a nudge to re-read the book and I found that, having moved to Dumfries and Galloway two years ago, I’m now living quite close to the very hills where Richard Hannay escaped his pursuers and unmasked a vast conspiracy. So far, I’ve not been pursued by homicidal Germans or had to climb out of any train windows, but I have found the countryside can be almost as empty and lonely as it was before the First World War.

The Writers’ Hub is a new website for fiction, poetry, features, reviews and opinon on the world of writing. It’s run by the Birkbeck Writing Programme, but anyone can join to read, comment, or submit your own writing for publication on the site

Touring Two Nations in one Day

Okay, this is a bit of a cheat, because the nations in question are Scotland and England – and Eyemouth and Berwick, to be precise. But if anyone is in the Borders, I shall be at the excellent Crossing the Bar bookshop in Eyemouth on Tuesday 3rd November at lunchtime, from 12 noon, signing books and chatting to anyone who fancies coming along. And then in the evening I shall be meeting the Berwick Book Group who have kindly invited me along (well, actually, I invited myself and they kindly agreed!) to talk about my book.

If there are any other book groups out there – preferably reasonably local, but you never know – who would be interested in meeting a real live author, please get in touch with me via the contacts page. I’m always delighted to meet real live readers as well…

Just a quick reminder to anyone who may be interested – I will be appearing alongside Thomas Legendre at Word Power Books in Edinburgh on Wednesday the 19th August – more details here.

Legendre’s book, The Burning is a thrilling tale about ‘sex, economics, ecology, gambling, and astrophysics.’ While I’ll be reading from Out of A Clear Sky, a tale of love, obsession, birds and madness. I think you’ll find that that’s a winning combination.

Edinburgh Book Fringe – Word Power Books

I will be appearing as part of the Word Power Books’ Edinburgh Book Fringe on Wednesday 19th August – more details here.

I’ll be reading alongside Thomas Legendre, whose first book, The Burning, is set in the world of gambling … and economics. It should make for an interesting session, for I’ve always enjoyed books that open up a whole new world to the reader.

For those who don’t already know it, Word Power Books is a great independent bookshop, and well worth a visit in itself. And if you do come, be sure to come up and say hello afterwards.
